School programs at the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum

We welcome school groups to the Museum. We believe it is an especially important part of our mission to receive, educate, and entertain young people. Our mission is to teach about the history of the Mennonites in Lancaster County. To do this we can arrange to visit your school, or to have a group from your school come to us.

We offer three basic tour packages at the Museum for school groups, or other children's groups (scouting groups, for example). Package A is available to groups as small as 7 students;  Package B and Package C are designed for groups of 15 or more children. We believe that the packages are all worthwhile, and well worth their small cost.

Package A: a tour of the 1719 Hans Herr House with a knowledgeable and personable guide.
Package B: a tour of the 1719 House as well as a tour of the grounds
Package C: a tour of the 1719 House and museum grounds as in package B, along with a wagon   ride through the grounds.

The pricing for these packages is as follows:

Package A: $1.50 per student
Package B: $3.00 per student
Package C: $4.00 per student

In all packages, adult chaperones (including both teachers and others) up to a ratio of  1 chaperone per 8 students are free. Other adults beyond this ratio (i.e. 1 adult per 7 or fewer students) must pay the regular museum group admission rate ($4.00 per person).

The Museum also offers special programs in the Fall and Spring known as Frolicks. These day-long (9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) events, one in the Fall and two in the Spring, are open to schools or home-schooling groups by reservation.

At the Frolicks, students are offered everything included in package C as well as demonstrations and hands-on activities such as bake-oven operation, open-hearth cooking, smoke-house operation, fibre arts including flax and wool processing, spinning, weaving, bobbin-lace making, quilting, dyeing, basket-weaving, candlemaking, soap-making, horse-powered machine work, 18th century woodworking, house construction, farming and gardening, colonial-era Indian trade, clothing demonstrations, and musket-firing demonstrations. For more information about Frolicks, contact the Administrative Assistant (info@hansherr.org) .
