Blacksmith Days

June 24 & 25

Blacksmith Days will be held Friday, June 24, from noon until 4 p.m. and Saturday, June 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A group of blacksmiths will set up portable forges and use the Herr House smithy. Community members are welcome to attend this free event to watch and learn. Visitors will have the opportunity to try their hands at it under supervision.

Blacksmiths forged a broad range of tools and implements from nails and candleholders to plows and shears. While blacksmithing has a long tradition, David Kauffman, coordinator for Blacksmith Days, notes that now it “seems like a black art” that no one talks about. He notes, “It’s almost four thousand years old, and we keep the tradition going.”

For those wishing to dive deeper into blacksmithing, group and individual classes are available.
